“Famagusta 3,5%” Photography & Multimedia Exhibition by Sotiris Danezis
Sotiris Danezis captures the haunting beauty of Famagusta’s ghost town
Fifty years after the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus, Sotiris Danezis presents the "Famagusta 3.5%" photography and multimedia exhibition. This project, showcasing the 3.5% of the enclosed city of Famagusta recently opened by the occupying regime, offers a poignant look at the events that have shaped Cyprus.
Under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and organized by the Culture, Sports, and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), the exhibition features over one hundred photographs, archival materials, and interviews with twelve city residents. These elements collectively tell the story of Famagusta, a city once cosmopolitan, now a symbol of tragedy and resilience.
Danezis’ work acts as a window through time, revealing the scars left by decades of looting and captivity. It offers a glimpse into the rich history of Famagusta, now attracting dark tourism, and presents the city’s layered memories and experiences. As exhibition curator Vangelis Ioakeimidis notes, "The walled city lives through lenses and security cameras, carrying memories of a life forcibly detached. Sotiris Danezis captures these experiences, presenting a powerful narrative of history and resilience."
"Famagusta 3.5%", curated by Vangelis Ioakeimidis, opened to the public on 10 July at the Melina Cultural Centre in Thiseio and ran successfully until 25 August 2024. The opening event was attended by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.
The exhibition was sponsored by the Holy Archdiocese of Athens Charitable Organization "Mission" and was part of the "1974 & 1944: Athens Celebrates its Freedom" anniversary events organized by the Municipality of Athens. Technology Sponsor LG OLED TV and Communication Sponsor MEGA TV have also supported the event, alongside Photolab and ALFA Acoustiki S.A.
